Michael’s ‘Zildjian Education Artist Agreement’ means that he is now a fully endorsed educator in the eyes of the world-renowned cymbal company, whose endorsee roster includes the likes of Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) Ben Thatcher (Royal Blood) and Hannah Ford Welton (Prince). Michael had this to say about the endorsement.

I entered into endorsement agreements with Sonor Drums, Zildjian Cymbals and Remo Drum heads. I hosted my first drum clinic and was nominated as Drummer of the Year by The Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA). Endorsement contracts with instrument companies is a hot topic. Covering the subject has been requested so much, and I’ve been asked about it so often, that I decided to do a two-part column. To get the truth out, I enlisted three of the top artist-relations directors in the drum world to help this month. They were very candid! Their input will help shed some light on the top questions.

Show the restMy name is retired Army Staff Sergeant Paul Delacerda, drummer for the first wounded warrior band, Vetted (Formerly Warrior Spirit), and director for Rock 4 Recovery. I was born and raised in Houston, Tx , I've been playing drums since I was nine years old. Being raised around music all my life, my grandfather was an accomplished musician with numerous albums released internationally. My father played guitar as a mariachi, and I was introduced to drums through my uncle, and rock music through my friends. I joined the military in 1995 after falling on hard times, and becoming homeless. I was stationed in Italy, and assigned to an airborne infantry unit. I deployed numerous times during my time overseas. I was re-assigned to the 25th infantry division (LRSD), at Schofield Barracks Hawaii in 1999. I left the Army briefly due to medical reasons, two months later 9/11 happened. After 9/11 I re-entered the Army, and was sent to Fort Bragg, Nc. in 2002 with the 82nd ABN Division. In 2005 while deployed to Iraq in support of the national elections, I was injured by an IED attack. I suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and various other injuries. I stayed in the military for over fifteen years till I was medically retired in 2009.
After I returned home, I attended an event through the veteran’s non-profit, Wounded Warrior Project. This is where I found my inspiration, to create America’s first wounded warrior band. We empower others through music, helping fellow warrior’s transition into civilian life. We created an avenue to help veterans express their feelings. Through my tragedy, I found my purpose with my fellow veterans, continuing to tour the country with a mission.

Bonham had an exclusive endorsement deal with Paiste, the Swiss-German cymbal company. In the mid 1960's Paiste designed one of the first ranges of cymbals that catered specifically to the amplified rock market. The range was called Giant Beats which consisted of a bronze alloy (B8) and a smaller tin content than their competitors Zildjian's (B20) range. With this new design, they aimed to create a more cutting sound whilst making the cymbals more resistent to cracking. This range became very popular amongst British rock drummers such as Bonham.
The Giant Beats range was discontinued by Paiste in 1971, being replaced by the similar 2002 series which Bonham adopted for the rest of his career.
A typical Bonham cymbal setup would include:
- 24 inch 2002 series ride
- 15 inch 2002 series Sound Edge hi-hats
- 16 inch or 18 inch 2002 series crash on his left
- 18 inch 2002 series medium ride for crashing on his right

He would sometimes additionally employ an 18inch crash on his left side and a large 20 or 22inch crash/ride on his right side, all of which were from the Paiste 2002 series.
The images below show the endorsement agreement Bonham held with Paiste, along with the cymbals he was given. (Click to view full size). It is interesting to note the wide range of cymbals Bonham requested to experiment with.
